Where’s My Nanotech?

Around 1990, when the term, Nanotech, was coined, it had several defining characteristics: molecular assemblers capable of self-reproduction, molecular computation elements, and macro-scale single-crystal diamonds.

Today, Nanotech means anything smaller than 1.0e-8 meters, and the three defining characteristics are nowhere to be seen.  What happened?  Are molecular assemblers impossible?  Are they coming?
