Where’s My Nanotech?

Around 1990, when the term, Nanotech, was coined, it had several defining characteristics: molecular assemblers capable of self-reproduction, molecular computation elements, and macro-scale single-crystal diamonds.
Today, Nanotech means anything smaller than 1.0e-8 meters, and the three defining characteristics are nowhere to be seen. What happened? Are molecular assemblers impossible? Are they coming?
