Meet Mito.

Mito

Mito

This is Mito, our rental car for four days.  It is an Alfa Romeo. Mito means Myth, I’m told.  It’s been a delightful car.  It has a six speed manual and a diesel engine that could use a little more oomph.  It likes to squeal its tires on switchbacks.

Elise in the Ditch

Posted by kernelbob on December 14, 2008

Don't do this.

Don't do this.

Yarj!  I drove my Elise into a ditch last night!

The Emberex Holiday Party was at our house last night. I always park the Elise at the end of the driveway so people can find the right house.  (The car’s a celebrity, after all.)  After the party I got a ride to the end of the driveway to get the car.

It was raining (or maybe snowing) and cold, and the Elise was all fogged up.  I couldn’t see forward at all, but it’s my own driveway.  How lost could I get?

Motocorsa Track Day, October 6th

Posted by kernelbob on October 9, 2008

Motocorsa held a track day for cars at Portland International Raceway this Monday.  They didn’t get enough drivers to sign up, so they opened the event to bikes.  Got lots of bikes.

There were just two run groups, one for bikes and one for cars.  So each group was on the track for half the day.  That was great.

Electrics and nerds

Posted by kernelbob on September 17, 2008

Take a look at this.  ecomodder.com: 10 Electric Cars You Can Buy Today.

Notice anything?  Every one of those cars is weird looking.  Not just design-didn’t-quite-gel like an Impreza or a Kia Sedona, but Popular-Science-cars-of-the-future weird.  Cars nobody except J. I. Q. Nerdelbaum Frink could envision himself driving.

The SUV of Lotus

Posted by kernelbob on September 3, 2008

No, not the APX, the Elise.  At the All-British Field Meet, four Elises were sitting among older Lotuses.  And compared to the classics, the Elise is a HUGE car!  Taller, longer, wider, heavier.  It’s at least four inches taller than an Europa, which is a couple of inches taller than an 11.

Weight is the enemy, and the enemy is us.

"Celebrating Jaguar"

"Celebrating Jaguar"

On Saturday, Anne and I went to the All-British Field Meet at Portland International Raceway.  Over six hundred cars were there.  Jaguar was the featured marque.

This post is mostly photos, with a little commentary. Click a photo for a larger picture.

Prius

Posted by kernelbob on August 21, 2008

Hertz gave me a Toyota Prius in San Jose this week.  I’d never driven one before.

The car was weird.  It reinforces my bias that Toyota builds cars for people who don’t like cars.

Kinetic Vehicles

Posted by kernelbob on July 4, 2008

I found another tiny vehicle manufacturer.  Kinetic Vehicles. Kinetic makes Locost parts and kits.  The Locost is a vernacular implementation of the Lotus Seven, kind of an open-source car.

The interesting thing about Kinetic is that it’s in Creswell, just ten miles away.  Now I’ll have to pay a visit.
