Same Five Digits

Posted by kernelbob on March 20, 2011

Enigma is a weekly column in New Scientist.  Every week it has a new puzzle.  Some of the Enigma puzzles could be solved using a computer.

This week’s puzzle, Enigma number 1638, is in that category.  Here are the facts of the problem.

  • I am thinking of three numbers.
  • Each number is a perfect square.
  • Each number has five digits.
  • Five different digits occur in all three numbers.
  • Each of the five digits occurs a different number of times.
  • The five numbers of times is the same as the five digits.
  • No digit occurs its own number of times.  (E.g., 4 is not used 4 times.)
  • If you knew which digit occurs once, you could uniquely identify the numbers.

Your task is to write a program that finds and prints the three perfect squares I am thinking of.

Video Test 1

Posted by kernelbob on August 18, 2009

I want to see if I can embed a Vimeo video into a post.  Got some travel videos…

Pronunciation of “Bruschetta” from Bob Miller on Vimeo.

That didn’t embed. Let’s try embedding it right in WordPress.

Have to upgrade WordPress for that.

If you know of a better way to publish HD video, leave a comment, thanks.

Venice and the Lake District

Posted by kernelbob on August 12, 2009

He had to duck. So did I.

He had to duck. So did I.

We left Venice on Monday morning.  The hotel has a back door that opens directly onto a canal.  We walked out that door and embarked onto a water taxi.  (That makes the fourth boat we’ve ridden on this trip.)  The taxi ride was great fun.  We stood up in the back and gawked like the tourists that we are.  I have a video for eventual upload.  The taxi took us to Piazzale Roma, where we picked up our rental car.

Riley wants to be a model.

Jacque came by today to fit the drawer fronts to my new desk.  While she was here, we cleaned up the room and took some pictures.

Lots more pictures after the break.

The Journalism Crisis

Posted by kernelbob on May 29, 2009

The blogosphere is atwitter.  The twitsphere is ablog.  Newspapers are dying. Journalists are watching their careers swirl away.  Their childrens will have no shoes.  Oe noes!

Technology does that.   Whether it’s videotape factories closed by the DVD, railroads shut down by the commercial jet, buggy whip makers with no future but to symbolize obsolescence, or monks made redundant by Gutenberg, technology destroys industries, professions, and ways of life.

The difference this time is that these journalists can write.  It’s what they do all day every day, and they’re good at it.  The emotion behind the story behind the news is what they’re talented, trained and practiced at bringing to life.  So when a sad story shows up right there in the office, they’re going to jump on it and pump it hard.  They don’t even have to open a phone book ask Google for sources and leads, sources are right across the hall packing up their desks.

So we, the reading public, get front row seats for this transformation, and it’ll seem like a bigger deal than it is.  Or maybe the other industry shutdowns  seemed smaller than they were.

Now with Less Plastic!

Posted by kernelbob on April 22, 2009

Can you see them in there?

Can you see them in there?

I bought three USB memory sticks from Costco recently.  They came in this package, which is almost big enough to hide a dog.

Less Plastic

Less Plastic

But wait!  What’s this in the corner?  LESS PLASTIC!  Imagine what the old packaging must have looked like.

Baby steps, SanDisk.  Baby steps.

Angel Oregon

Posted by kernelbob on March 13, 2009

Yesterday I attended Angel Oregon 2009. AO is an angel investment conference. Six startups’ CEOs presented their companies, and another 14 CEOs gave elevator pitches.

But the conference was just the finale of a three-month process.  I got to participate, as an investor, for the first time this year.
